The word covers three families. Phytocannabinoids come from the cannabis plant. Endocannabinoids are produced by the human body. Synthetic cannabinoids are manufactured, and include some licensed medicines as well as the dangerous unregulated substances sold illicitly under names like Spice.
Around a hundred phytocannabinoids have been identified. Only a handful have been studied in any depth, and only two — THC and CBD — have been studied enough to support licensed medicines.
